Welcome

Tim Crowther who is a member of the GMN activities team was welcomed to the meeting.

Review of the year

The climbing and hill walking team repeated the previous years workshops and had well attended sessions.

Mark Kennedy’s kayak sessions at Sale water continued although demand was not as great as passed years.

Several members of the activities team attended the Jamboree either as IST or OST at Splash and Gilwell Adventure.

Stockport district had a successful water fun day. Glossop district continued with its kayaking sessions thought the summer.

Activity permit scheme

The proposed national database has been put back another 12 months at leased this is in addition to the 2 years it is already behind schedule. This means that the county database needs to continue being used and that the process has to remain under the control of the ACC activities.

Expired permits

Concern was voiced at the number of leaders who’s permits have expired and have not been renewed. It was felt that a number of leaders were still actively leading activities despite not holding a valid permit. It must be emphasised that they are not covered by scout insurance if they do not hold a valid permit.

It was also noted that some leaders held NGB instructor qualifications but still had not applied for a permits or renewed them.

Assessors Module 25a

It was noted that the module 25 that all assessors most now have done is a different syllabus to the normal module 25. Ken Sever had attended one recently at Hafod. As it is a requirement that all assessors must have completed one it was agreed that GMN and GME would look to combine to run one. Keith will liaise with Dave Saunders (ACC activities GMN) then contact those assessors who require it. Ken offered to help run it.

Future activities

It was agreed that we would run the usual workshops. The climbing one would not include an assessment at the end and would be expanded to give more in depth practical sessions.

Mark will run his Kayaking sessions again in the summer.

Workshop dates              Climbing 15 & 22 May 19:00 Linnet Clough

Basic hill walking 19th & 22 June 19th at County office.

After some discussion it was agreed that there was a need for leaders who were working towards gaining a permit for rock to have other experienced climber to climb with. It was agreed that we would start once a month climbing meeting for these leaders, starting next Spring.

GMN are to give us a list of the dates they are to run climbing sessions and it was agreed that GME’s climbing team would assist to enable greater numbers to be processed.

GMN will be running kayaking and sailing sessions also.

GME is to run a climbers badge course for scouts on 16-18th May. The coordinator for this is Caroline McCann. It is hoped to run it from a large bunk house in the High Peak.

AOB

D 0f E Supervision. Ann Vernon asked for clarification on what authorisation was needed on the permit for remote supervision. The answer is they need to hold a supervisors permit for the terrain they are in.

Archery and shooting Sheila O’Flaherty asked for information on getting training to the recommended levels. Attempts have been made to run Archery training but all to no avail to date, as they are excessively expensive. GMN run them periodically so Keith will speak to Dave Saunders.

Date of nest meeting

The next activity team meeting will be on Thursday 24th April at 20:00 in County office.
